The Culture Cloud project addresses the challenge of fragmented and heterogeneous cultural data, which is currently distributed across multiple institutions, stored in varying formats, and in part inaccessible. The project’s central objective is to develop a unified infrastructure that integrates these disparate sources, enabling secure storage as well as seamless findability and searchability of cultural data across Lower Saxony.

Project Goals

  1. Central cultural data infrastructure: Establishing a state-wide platform with standardized interfaces to data-holding institutions, ensuring continuous access and reliable long-term archiving.

  2. Uniform data standards: Developing and implementing consistent requirements, particularly for the identification of entities such as persons and locations, thereby supporting standardized processes of data creation and preservation.

  3. Comprehensive data acquisition: Expanding the infrastructure by systematically incorporating additional cultural data, including materials that are currently available only in dispersed digital collections or in analog form.

GWDG’s Role in the project

In the Culture Cloud project, GWDG is responsible for providing the technical infrastructure that supports secure data storage, long-term archiving, and the operation of essential services. The entire process is guided by recognized best practices in Research Data Management, including the adoption of Persistent Identifiers (PIDs) and FAIR Digital Objects (FDOs), to ensure data are findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable. Beyond infrastructure, GWDG also conducts advanced analyses of the collected cultural data, extracting meaningful insights and constructing a knowledge graph that enables deeper contextualization and new avenues of cultural research.
